Avhandlingen har tittelen Nearby Nature and Wellbeing Among Norwegian Residents: The Role of Place-belongingness.

About the doctoral candidate
Raul Grau-Ruiz (34) from Málaga, Spain, holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in sport sciences (BA, 2013; MA, 2014), friluftsliv (outdoor life education) (BA, 2018), and health and social sciences (MA, 2021) from the universities of Seville and Granada in Spain and from Volda University College in Norway. He currently works as a personal assistant through the organisation Uloba – Independent Living.
On Friday 20 November 2026, Grau-Ruiz will deliver his trial lecture and public defence of his doctoral dissertation for the PhD in Health and Social Sciences, Professional Practice – Terms and Development. The PhD programme is offered jointly by Volda University College and Molde University College. The disputation is the final part of the doctoral programme.
The thesis is titled Nearby Nature and Wellbeing Among Norwegian Residents: The Role of Place-belongingness. The trial lecture and public defence will be held in English.
About the thesis
This doctoral research examines the relationship between nature near people's homes and subjective wellbeing.
Using national Norwegian survey data, Grau-Ruiz has investigated whether proximity to green spaces is linked to subjective wellbeing aspects such as life satisfaction, positive emotions, and a sense of meaning in life.
He has focused particularly on two potential pathways: whether nature may promote physical activity, and whether nature in the local environment may foster a sense of belonging where residents live. Grau-Ruiz has also examined whether these associations may vary based on multiple factors, such as the type of nearby green spaces and personal conditions like age, gender, income, and immigration background.
The results indicate that nature in the local environment is associated with a better experience of life, though the associations vary across individuals and situations. The study thus provides a more nuanced picture of how nature near our homes may contribute to population wellbeing.
